HarvestPlus CEO Beverley Postma today begins a ten-day working tour of our country operations in Africa. The tour will allow Postma, who joined HarvestPlus in August, to strengthen her familiarity with operations on the ground and engage with strategic local partners involved in promoting biofortified nutritious crops.
Starting in Uganda, Postma’s trip will also take her to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). More than 10 million people in these and other HarvestPlus target countries on the continent are already enjoying the nutritional and agronomic benefits of biofortified crops such as vitamin A-rich orange sweet potato, maize, and cassava, and high-iron beans.
The tour also presents an opportunity for the CEO to galvanize efforts to meet the pledges she recently made in Rome, Italy, on behalf of HarvestPlus in support of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. Those pledges include; scaling up the delivery of biofortified crops while emphasizing a food systems approach; actively promoting the empowerment of women and youth along the biofortification value chain; and framing the third global biofortification conference in 2018 within the context of the Decade of Action.
