Target Crops

HarvestPlus has identified staples food crops that that are important in the diets of poor and malnourished people around the world. At this stage, the program is focused on the six most important staple crops. These are:

Plant breeders for apply a dual approach to these crops where possible:

1. early development of "fast-track" varieties that will convincingly demonstrate the validity of the biofortification strategy,
2. a lengthier parallel development process of varieties that combine the best nutritional and agronomic traits, using adaptive/decentralized breeding methods and seed production where feasible.
