Impact Pathway

The HarvestPlus strategy consists of three main stages: Discovery, Development, and Dissemination. There are nine sequential steps within these stages that constitute the HarvestPlus Impact Pathway as shown below. Interdisciplinary teams of scientists and researchers work along this impact pathway for each target crop and micronutrient.

Discovery

  • Identify malnourished populations that can benefit from biofortification.
  • Determine appropriate nutrient target levels for selected populations.
  • Screen crop varieties and germplasm for use in breeding.

Development

  • Breed new biofortified varieties of staple food crops with higher micronutrient levels.
  • Test performance of new varieties in the field.
  • Measure retention of micronutrients in crops and foods.
  • Evaluate capacity of body to absorb and use micronutrients from biofortified crops.

Dissemination

  • Develop strategies to distribute biofortified crop seeds to producers.
  • Promote marketing and consumption of biofortified crops and food to improve nutritional status.
