Howarth Bouis – Director (PMT Member)

Dr. Bouis received his B.A. in economics from Stanford University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Food Research Institute. Since 1993, he has sought to promote biofortification within the CGIAR, among national agricultural research centers, and in the human nutrition community. His past research focused on understanding how economic factors affect food demand and nutrition outcomes, particularly in Asia. Bouis holds a joint appointment at the International Food Policy Research Institute (Washington, D.C.) and the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) (Cali, Colombia).

Wolfgang H. Pfeiffer – Head, Product Development (PMT Member)
Dr. Pfeiffer obtained his Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in Agricultural Sciences from Stuttgart -Hohenheim University in Germany. Before joining HarvestPlus, he was Head Plant Breeder for the Intensive Agro-ecosystems Program, at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico and responsible for applied and strategic bread wheat, durum wheat, and triticale improvement under CIMMYT’s global germplasm development mandate. He has over 20 years’ experience working in international agricultural research.

Joe Tohme – Head, Biotechnology (PMT Member)
Dr. Tohme has a Ph.D. in Crop Science from Michigan State University. He is currently the leader of the Agribiodiversity and Biotechnology project. He helped set up the CIAT molecular markers lab, and implement the molecular characterization of genetic diversity and mapping of agronomical traits in bean, cassava, rice, and Brachiaria.

Erick Boy – Head, Nutrition (PMT Member, based at Micronutrients Initiative, Ottawa)
Dr. Boy obtained his medical degree from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala (1987) and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in nutrition at the University of California at Davis. Before joining HarvestPlus, Erick was regional coordinator for micronutrient nutrition technical cooperation for the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP/PAHO). He also spent nine years at the Micronutrient Initiative (MI) where he managed Latin American projects and the vitamin A supplements procurement project.

Harrie Hendrickx – Head, Product Delivery (PMT Member, based in The Netherlands)
Dr. Hendrickx received his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Leiden University in The Netherlands. Before joining HarvestPlus, he worked for Unilever in the Netherlands, Germany, and Ghana, mostly in food production and development. During the last seven years at Unilever, he was responsible for the development of a supply chain for Allanblackia oil, a new seed oil produced through public-private partnerships in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Bonnie McClafferty – Head, Development and Communications (PMT Member)
Ms. McClafferty obtained her B.Sc. degree in Agronomy from Cornell University and M.A. in Public Policy and Public Administration from the University of Virginia.She oversees fundraising, communications, and advocacy. She has more than 20 years of experience working in agricultural development both with the NGO community and at inter-governmental organizations, with a focus on agriculture and gender. She was recently appointed to the Technical Advisory Committee of Helen Keller International.
