Rice is the staple food for more than half the world’s population. In several Asian countries, rice provides 50 to 80 percent of the energy intake of the poor.

Most of the poor in Asia, suffer from hidden hunger including zinc deficiency. Zinc is involved in more body functions than any other mineral and is essential for survival.

Because of the high daily consumption of rice in Asia, it is an ideal staple crop to biofortify with zinc.
