Biofortification in Brazil (Portuguese)
Following the 4th Annual Brazilian Biofortification Meeting, Embrapa has released a video filmed in conjunction with the event. Embrapa, The Brazilian Agricultural Research, co-sponsored the event with HarvestPlus and other organizations, which took place July 2011 in Teresina, Brazil.
The video, filmed in Portuguese with English subtitles, features interviews from the meeting and explains how the concept of biofortification came to be implemented in Brazil. It highlights the progress made by Embrapa in the effort to biofortify several different crops over the past ten years.
Eleven regional Embrapa offices are working on the BioFORT Project, a part of the Biofortification Network in Brazil set up by HarvestPlus. According to the BioFORT website, Brazil is the only country working to study and introduce eight biofortified crops at the same time, namely; pumpkin, rice, sweet potatoes, beans, cowpeas, cassava, maize, and wheat.
Embrapa’s mission is to provide feasible solutions for the sustainable development of Brazilian agribusiness through knowledge and technology generation and transfer.
